As moviegoers checked out Straight Outta Compton this weekend, boosting its domestic box-office gross to $60.2 million, some eagle-eyed baseball fans noticed a blooper in the film’s opening scene.
The movie opens in 1986, with Eazy-E sporting a black White Sox hat with the intersecting-letters “Sox” logo, which the team didn’t adopt until the ‘90s. The logo, according to the Baseball Hall of Fame and the White Sox’s own website, didn’t make its first appearance until 1990, with the team officially adopting it in 1991. The retro-looking logo, USA Today‘s For the Win blog points out, was based off of old logos, but that specific design hadn’t been used before.
Dr. Dre famously wore the hat in the “Nuthin‘ But a ‘G’ Thang” video, but that was in the ‘90s.
To add insult to injury, the anachronistic Sox cap is included in a New Era hat collection inspired by the movie.
In 1986, the Sox were sporting a more linear and colorful “SOX” logo, as seen in the below photo of infielder Julio Cruz.
CBS Sports helpfully Photoshopped the scene to show what Eazy-E would look like wearing the correct hat.
Compton distributor Universal, the White Sox and a rep for Compton director F. Gary Gray have not yet responded to The Hollywood Reporter‘s request for comment.

Compton review tomorrow. Biggest problem? Eazy E wearing the Black White Sox hat in 1986 in opening scene. Logo didn’t debut until 1991. 🙁

One obvious ‘Straight Outta Compton’ costume fail – Eazy wearing the black ‘Sox’ cap in 1986. Debuted in late 1990.

In the opening scene of Straight Outta Compton (1986), Eazy is wearing a Sox hat. Those Sox hats hadn’t come out yet. Come on F Gary!

Dear Straight Outta Compton, Eazy-E could not have worn the 1991 White Sox hat in 1986. Thanks.

Who would have thought that the biggest controversy of Straight Outta Compton would be over Eazy E’s hat? pic.twitter.com/GJEwTmFoi7
