Showtime’s Shameless is adding another strong woman to its cast.
Nebraska Oscar nominee June Squibb has booked a key role on the upcoming seventh season of the Emmy Rossum starrer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Squibb will recur as Etta, a salty and peppery 80-year-old Southside Chicago woman who has owned the neighborhood forever.
Squibb joins a cast that includes fellow new addition Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue), who will play Margo, a real estate mogul who owns the coffee shop where Fiona (Rossum) works and who becomes a role model for her.
Squibb’s recent TV roles include episodes of Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Getting On, Girls and Glee. On the feature side, she’s had roles in Nebraska, About Schmidt and Scent of a Woman. She’s repped by BRS/Gage Talent.
Season six of Shameless ended with a cliffhanger when Frank (William H. Macy) succeeded in ruining Fiona’s wedding to Sean (Dermot Mulroney), the owner of the diner where they both worked. When Sean returned to find Fiona alone on the curb in her wedding dress after the failed ceremony, the couple parted ways — seemingly for good. (Given Mulroney is now the lead of CBS drama Pure Genius, it’s unclear if he’ll have any sort of presence when Shameless returns.)
Season seven of Shameless is set to premiere Sunday, Oct. 2, on Showtime. Rossum will make her directorial debut with episode four.
